SMPS Member Spotlight – Tegan Wylde, Ben Hur Construction

My role as Marketing Coordinator at Ben Hur Construction is to keep the integrity of the company throughout all platforms of social media, marketing collateral, and client contacts by enhancing the Ben Hur brand. I have been in the industry since August 2020.

What first peaked your interest about this organization and led you to want to be a member?

Through Sarah Bundy, my mentor, I have expanded my knowledge and passion for marketing in such a short period of time, and I cannot wait to see where it takes me. I can go to her for anything work-related or not, and she is there to guide me.

Now that you are a SMPS member, what are you hoping to gain through your membership, especially since we’re slowly but surely starting to have in-person events again?

I am excited to network with like-minded individuals who have similar goals and ambitions as I do. Through this organization, I believe I will become a more well-rounded marketing professional that can gain knowledge through other insights.

What do you enjoy most about your position? What do you enjoy least?

The thing I enjoy most about my position is being able to show my creativity through my work every day. I am fortunate enough to be with a company that allows me to express my original ideas to enhance the brand. What I enjoy the least—is thinking I know how to do something and not taking the extra time to ask for help. I have always been a problem solver, but have quickly found out it is okay to ask for help from colleagues.

What is the best advice you’ve received regarding your position working in the AEC industry? Or is there any kind of mantra you try to work by every day?

The best advice I have received is to trust myself with the work I am producing. Since I am beginning my career, it is hard to know if my ideas are worthwhile, but my colleagues give me support and encouragement every day which has made me trust more in myself. With my work, I make sure it is something that makes me proud and I believe in. Because how can someone believe in it if I don’t?

During the pandemic, everyone was either trying new hobbies or picking up old ones. Was there any hobbies that you started while everyone was working remotely? Or picked up an old one that you hadn’t done in years and remembered how much you loved it?

Throughout the pandemic, I found my love for reading and writing again. I have always had a niche for reading and writing but throughout the years I had lost the drive for it. I read around 7 books during the pandemic and started to journal almost daily.

Where is your favorite place in the entire world to be?

New Zealand - I have to say it is my absolute favorite place to be physically because of the culture and scenery. I embraced the culture the entire time I was there since my roommate was a New Zealand Native, which has led to personal growth and having a more open mind. I spent most of my time on the North Island, which is filled with lush green hillsides and bustling cities but had the chance to visit the South Island which consisted of snow-tipped mountains and rain forests. It was truly an amazing experience. But, on a more personal note anywhere with my family is truly my favorite place to be. My family is the most important thing to me, and I would not be where I am without them.
