What led you to apply for the SMPS Member Scholarship?
I have been very interested in joining SMPS since learning about it about a year ago. The scholarship opportunity popped up at the right time and I thought ‘Why not go for it!?’ – so glad I did! I’m so grateful to have been selected!
What do you hope to gain from your SMPS Membership? Since you joined, what have been the highlights so far? What events are you looking forward to in the coming year?
I believe there will be many benefits to joining SMPS. I have already met some incredible industry people through a variety of events (pickleball, anyone?!) planned by the chapter. A few of us have even begun to meet monthly to discuss current marketing efforts and bounce ideas off of one another. I am very excited to learn through others' experiences as well as come up with fresh ideas together.
How did you get your start in the AEC industry and what led you to this industry?
Facilitec is my first job in the industry. (My first career was in corporate event planning, which I enjoyed for fifteen years.) My husband, John, works for Jacobs and over the years has introduced me to many coworkers and industry people. To have become friends with many of them first has made any opportunity to work alongside them on a project even more special!
What is the best career advice you've ever received?
Meet as many people as you can and learn as much as you can from them.
Your network is your arsenal.
Also, if you can say it in 100 words, don’t use 1000. (That one is harder for me, lol)
If you had all the time in the world and could learn to do anything, what would it be?
As a working mom, having ‘all the time in the world’ is hard to imagine. However, with more time, I would cook more and dive deeper into learning Italian. My efforts to learn Italian were interrupted by the pandemic and I would love to improve. Also, I’m currently attempting to learn to golf. You need a lot of time for that.
If you had to verbalize a slogan for your life – something you live by, maybe a principle, what would it be? Have fun with it!
“We are here to love each other.” I read it somewhere years ago and it just stuck with me. It’s possible to show love in so many ways! It’s a great reminder to ask myself if the people I care about know how much I value, trust and appreciate them.
