SMPS Member Spotlight – Jamie Weaver, Terracon

Senior Client Development Specialist – I have been a member of SMPS STL for 4 years. In my time with SMPS I have served on the communications committee and the membership committee.

What led you to apply for the chapter’s SMPS Build Business Scholarship? When you applied, what were you hoping to gain from the SMPS Build Business Conference and the sessions? Had you attended a conference before?

I applied for the chapter’s Build Business scholarship because everything was virtual this year. I would have liked to have been able to travel though and meet other people in the industry from different regions to learn what is working for them and determine how I could possibly integrate new techniques and methods discovered through these conversations. While this was my first SMPS Build Business Conference, it will definitely not be my last. Maybe Atlanta 2022?

After attending the virtual conference, what do you feel you gained from the sessions? What was the most memorable session you attended?

Our roles as AEC marketing and business development professionals are specialized and it was nice to hear from others in the same types of roles how they are succeeding.

I particularly enjoyed Kai Knight, the violinist keynote speaker. The message was that he knows how his notes are supposed to sound but the audience does not so do not be so hard on yourself if everything does not turn out the way you planned. You need to have the competence to play the notes, but an artist affects the emotion.

What is your main responsibilities in your position? What are the challenges and rewards of your position?

My main responsibility is connecting with our local community and sharing how we can help them achieve their goals.

The largest challenge is time and patience. There are so many great people to meet and interesting industries that we benefit. I would like to meet them all today.

The greatest reward are the people and the projects. I have the pleasure of working with some extremely knowledgeable and kind people on amazing projects. Our projects range from underwater divers to drilling for geotechnical, we also do environmental and materials testing. Our materials testing department can test anything with an ASTM standard. I recently learned that a James Bond test is a thing.

How did you get your start in the AEC industry and any advice to those just starting out?

I got started in the commercial roofing industry. My best advice to anyone starting in this industry is, “Be authentic and Be involved.”

If you had a year off work, how would you spend that time off?

I would stay home. I would enjoy my home, my family and pets. Cook some good food and have people over and enjoy the simple things.

What do you look forward to at the end of a busy week?

Fall Down Friday is our family tradition. After a long week, we recharge by getting take out for dinner and watching a movie at home.
