Cindy serves as Director of Marketing for Lawrence Group (and its affiliate companies, Integrate Construction Partners and New + Found), where she leads a team of six talented marketers. Together, they serve as leaders in all eight of Lawrence Group’s markets and across four offices, supporting both day-to-day marketing efforts and larger strategic initiatives that help drive the organization forward. She loves working in an environment where creativity and strategy intersect. Being part of a multidisciplinary organization like Lawrence Group allows Cindy to continuously learn and contribute in new ways.
Cindy first became involved with SMPS St. Louis in 2004 and have been an active member ever since. During that time, she volunteered on committees and served on the chapter board for eight years in various roles, including Chapter President.
What has motivated you to remain a member of SMPS all these years? What do you think makes the SMPS St. Louis Chapter special?
I can’t imagine my career without SMPS. It has been such a meaningful part of my journey. While the entire organization is exceptional, my home chapter, St. Louis, is especially close to my heart. I’ve had the opportunity to witness its growth firsthand, and it has been remarkable to see how it has evolved and strengthened over time. What really sets it apart, though, is the people. SMPS St. Louis is an incredible group of marketers and leaders who genuinely support one another and are invested in each other’s success and in the success of our businesses.
How has SMPS impacted your career? What is the most memorable SMPS event you've attended? What do you consider the most valuable benefit you've gained since becoming an SMPS member?
SMPS has been a cornerstone of my career. Early on, it provided educational opportunities that helped me grow my knowledge of the AEC industry. When I earned my CPSM designation in 2008, it was a meaningful milestone that validated my experience and gave me added confidence. Having a professional credential comparable to the designations held by our technical staff reinforced the value and expertise that marketing brings to our industry.
My most memorable event was attending my first SMPS national conference in 2005 in New Orleans. At the time, our St. Louis chapter was much smaller – only one other chapter member attended that year. But that experience was a turning point for me. It was the moment I realized I was part of something much, much bigger. Knowing that I was part of such a large and supportive community of marketers doing so many great things gave me a renewed sense of perspective and inspiration that I carried with me long after I returned home.
Without a doubt, the most valuable benefit of being part of SMPS has been the long-lasting relationships and friendships I’ve made over the years with SMPS’ers across the country. These connections have become an invaluable network of peers I can turn to for ideas, advice, and support. Beyond that, many of these professional relationships have grown into genuine friendships, making SMPS not just a place to learn and grow, but a true community.
What is your most notable achievement in your career, and why do you consider it significant?
My most notable achievement has been the opportunity to mentor and support the growth of others. Whether through leading my team or participating in formal mentoring programs, one of our most important responsibilities as leaders is to invest in people. I’ve been fortunate to help individuals grow in their careers, build confidence, and find greater fulfillment in their work. That impact is especially meaningful because it extends beyond any one role or organization and contributes to the strength and future of professional services marketing.
What advice would you give someone entering the AEC Industry as a marketing professional?
Get out of the office and immerse yourself in the industry as much as you can. Meet new people, build relationships, and take advantage of mentoring programs and other opportunities to get involved. Joining committees, volunteering, and eventually serving in leadership roles like a board position can accelerate your career.
Learn as much as you can about what your technical staff does and how they deliver value – the greater your understanding, the more effectively you can market your firm’s services. Similarly, take the time to really understand your firm’s clients – their needs, their challenges, and what drives their decision-making.
Finally, look for opportunities to help others along the way.
