SMPS Member Spotlight – Becky Ryan

I’m coming up on two years with FGMA. My role is Regional Marketing Manager for the Chicago Region (covering our offices in Oak Brook, Chicago, and Milwaukee). The role includes wearing many hats – proposal strategy and production, content development, social media, conference planning, etc. etc. I love being part of the A/E industry and so glad that I found my way here 20+ years ago!

I just celebrated my 15th year as an SMPS member! It’s been rewarding being part of the organization. I’ve been on almost all of committees at one time or another throughout my 15 years: communications, sponsorship, and membership.

Fifteen Years with SMPS! As a long time member of the chapter, what do you think have been the best (and the worst) changes you’ve seen happen to the chapter since starting.

The best change has been the incredible growth of the chapter. It is amazing to see all the new members and the diversity in the types of A/E/C companies that are part of SMPS. I don’t think I can pinpoint any negative changes, just challenges. COVID certainly made it difficult to stay as connected but I think SMPS did a great job of moving to a virtual format when possible.

What do you feel is the most important you’ve gained since joining SMPS all those years ago?

I joined SMPS to connect with A/E/C colleagues and to learn more about the industry from a marketing perspective. I was brand new to the industry and was looking to build relationships with my peers at other firms around St. Louis.  My time at SMPS has provided amazing resources to expand my A/E/C knowledge and I have genuinely enjoyed the comradery amongst members. I have built incredible relationships with colleagues that I consider mentors who really inspired me to continue growing my career in this industry.

When did you start in the AEC industry? Had you always planned to work in this industry?

I entered the A/E/C industry like most marketers, by accident. I was contacted by a headhunter that was looking to fill a position in marketing/communications for a St. Louis based architecture firm. I interviewed and got the job. That was in 2001 and I haven’t looked back! I’ve been lucky enough to work for A/E firms both big and small with diverse practice areas. Each day is different – and that’s what I love!

What is the best career advice you have ever received? Do you have any advice to those just starting out?

I had a previous colleague who used to remind me often that I “can’t boil the ocean!” This phrase has always stuck with me. Managing multiple proposal deadlines while keeping up with the soft deadlines (that never seem to get done) can seem impossible. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I try to break things up and prioritize. Review all my tasks and projects to make sure I have clear guidelines and plans in place. He also reminded me that I don’t have to do everything myself. Delegate what I can and reach out for help if needed.

My advice to those just starting out:  Seek out opportunities to get involved both inside and outside of your organization. Be open to trying new things and engage with your coworkers and peers! Use volunteer opportunities to build your personal skill set and network. It will provide you invaluable experience and allow you to interface with a diverse group of people. Not to mention, it will provide visibility for your firm.

What is your favorite thing to do in St. Louis?

Cardinal Baseball, of course! We are lucky to live in such a diverse City with so much to do. I’m ashamed to say that I don’t take advantage of all the great culture and food that St. Louis has to offer. (Although in my defense, I live ALLLLL the way out in St. Charles and there is lots to do - and eat – in St. Charles County as well. Come check it out!)

If you had all the time in the world and could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I would love to learn French. I have always thought that it is such a beautiful language. And of course, once I could speak it fluently, I would have to visit France so I could put it into practice!
