Amplify

As we are all aware, there is a MAJOR labor shortage for all categories of workers….especially within in the world of AEC. For all your recruiters out there, I mean it when I say, I feel your pain!

While attending the SMPS Amplify Conference this past July, I expected to learn about best practices regarding marketing and business development. To my surprise, there were quite a few sessions that focused entirely on retention and recruitment! Of all the sessions, my absolute favorite was, “GAME CHANGER: Attracting and Finding Talent in a Labor Shortage,” presented by Maisha Hagan, CEO of Beauty and the Boss.

During this session, I learned a wide variety of “dos” and “don’ts” from: using more generic job descriptions, not having a compulsory obsession with experience, what hiring bias’ exists within our industry… even what words should be avoided on job postings! The best part was at the end, when she invited the audience to discuss their own intrinsic benefits born from Covid19 that were implemented to enhance both retention and recruitment. There were quite a few interesting ideas discussed... even some my leadership found interesting enough to consider for our own firm!

Maisha said it best, “In order to fill vacancies, businesses big and small have to change the way they attract, recruit, screen, and hire.” I highly encourage any and all who are facing this challenge to read her white paper, where she offers well thought out ideas and strategies that help employers attract, locate and retain the talent necessary to thrive in our marketplace.

Great conference, great speakers, and extraordinary event overall! I look forward to next year!
