As a first-time attendee to Build Business, I had no idea what to expect after hearing so many stories about how wonderful the conference is when people attended in-person. I was humbled by the opportunity that the SMPS St. Louis Chapter gave me by granting me the Build Business Scholarship this year to attend the conference. I appreciated everything I was able to gain from the sessions I attended.
This year, with the conference being completely virtual once again, I was a bit leery as to what to expect. Being virtual though, I must admit it was great being able to watch the On-Demand Sessions at my own pace since often in this industry, our deadlines could care less whether we are attending a conference or not.
Since I was only able to watch a handful of sessions during the actual conference itself, I had the opportunity to re-watch several of the same sessions again and then watch additional sessions I had wanted to see originally. I found there was so much rich content and that nearly all the sessions I attended were amazing and left me deep in thought long after it was over.
As a writer by trade, the session that spoke to me the most was “Everyone Has a 7 Figure Story, If It’s Well Crafted!” with Coach Jimmy Hays Nelson.
The way Jimmy told his story in the beginning to help paint the picture of how he became who is today and then brought the whole idea around to the AEC industry was absolutely incredible.
“Are you wiling to be willing?” Jimmy said during his session.
Are you willing to try something different?
Are you willing to reclaim your life and discover who you were meant to be?
Are you willing to get outside your comfort zone?
Everyone has a seven-figure story when told correctly and in the right way. Storytelling is the #1 business building tool, especially in today’s environment. People are wanting to feel something; they are wanting to understand what other people are going through after spending so much time being in their own solitude.
According to Jimmy, who is a life coach and storyteller, ‘It’s the story that moves the needle.”
The Fundamentals of Storytelling including:
1) Tell the reader why we are the same – Why we are relatable? Why are you just like me? The story must be stated in such a language to reach the right audience.
2) Why are you extraordinary? What have you done that they haven’t figured out yet?
3) Show your Heart! Why is this so important to you and to your company? Uncover the best story to tell what you want people to know.
Sometimes it’s the story that helps keeps that door open simply because of the heart and the story put in it.
Jimmy emphasized that every conversation we have is storytelling.
“Storytelling is the way to shift the way people think about any situation – the culture, internally and externally,” Jimmy said. “Tell a Story. Change the World.”
For myself as a writer for a majority of career, listening to Jimmy, truer words have never been spoken. Storytelling is a universal means of marketing that is used across so many industries. I am continuously wondering how we can portray the story of a client, a project and / or a community to better tell the story of our firm because people relate to how we worked with others to accomplish an end goal that results in what everyone envisioned for their project.
Of all the wonderful sessions I attended, the words that Jimmy spoke to me made so much sense and were things that I could easily implement at FGMA every day.
As far as next year’s Build Business, I look forward to the opportunity to attend future conferences whether in-person or virtually.
